Eccentric Plug Valves

Rotary eccentric-plug valves that pair globe-valve ruggedness with rotary efficiency — the plug cams into and out of the seat for low friction, long life and tight shutoff in erosive, hard-to-handle service.

  • Rotary · eccentric (cammed) plug
  • Cams into/out of the seat
  • Reduced friction & seat wear
  • Built for erosive, hard-to-handle fluids

What it is

Eccentric Plug Valves

An eccentric plug valve is a rotary control valve whose plug-shaped closure member follows an eccentric, cammed path as it rotates. The plug makes no contact with the seat ring until it turns within a few degrees of closed — then it cams into the seat, the seating surfaces dynamically align, and the valve achieves tight shutoff.

That cammed motion is the whole point. By keeping the plug clear of the seat through most of the travel, the design minimizes contact, friction and seat wear — exactly what erosive, coking, corrosive and viscous fluids punish in other valve styles. It combines the ruggedness of a globe valve with the efficiency and compactness of a rotary.

Eccentric plug valves give throttling or on/off control with a self-centering seat ring and a rugged plug that allows forward or reverse flow with tight shutoff in either direction. The Fisher™ V500 — the flagship of this design, proven across industries since 1984 — carries trim options from 316 stainless steel to ceramic for the most severe erosive service.

How it works

Construction & trim

From open, the plug swings on its eccentric shaft well clear of the seat, so the flowing fluid barely touches the sealing surfaces — the key to long life in erosive and abrasive media. Only in the last few degrees does the plug cam into the self-centering seat ring, where the surfaces align dynamically to seal.

Trim and material selection set the service envelope. Hardened and ceramic trims resist the wear of entrained solids and coking fluids — in proven cases, ceramic trim has extended the time between turnarounds from a few months to a year. Paired with a Fisher™ pneumatic actuator and a FIELDVUE™ digital valve controller, the assembly holds control close to set point while battling erosion.

Fisher™ V500 (flagship)

The principal rotary eccentric plug valve — integral flanges, self-centering seat and trim from 316 SS to ceramic for severe erosive service. Proven across industries since 1984.

Self-centering seat / bidirectional

A rugged plug and self-centering seat ring allow forward or reverse flow with tight shutoff in either direction.

Hardened & ceramic trim

Trim options from stainless to ceramic resist erosion, coking and abrasion — extending service life in the hardest-to-handle fluids.

Throttling or on/off

Configurable for modulating control or on/off duty, with integral body flanges that mate to a range of pipeline flange classes.

Fisher™ Eccentric Plug Valves in a process application

Common applications

Where eccentric plug valves fit

  • Erosive and abrasive service with entrained solids or sand — where seat and trim wear is the recurring failure
  • Coking, corrosive and viscous "hard-to-handle" fluids that foul or wear other valve styles
  • Severe-service rotary applications that demand long life between turnarounds
  • Throttling or on/off duties needing tight, bidirectional shutoff in a compact rotary body
  • Refining, chemical, mining and power processes with dirty or abrasive media

Why it's chosen

  • Cammed plug clears the seat through most of travel — low friction and minimal seat wear
  • Globe-valve ruggedness with rotary efficiency and compactness
  • Ceramic and hardened trim options for the most erosive, coking service
  • Tight, bidirectional shutoff with a self-centering seat ring

Worth weighing

  • A defined rotary characteristic — less interchangeable trim than a globe valve
  • Its value shows most in erosive/severe service; for clean general throttling a globe or segmented ball valve may suffice

Genuine OEM

Genuine spare parts for eccentric plug valves

In erosive service the trim is everything — and the prized parts are the ones few can supply: genuine OEM plugs, seat rings and retainers in hardened materials, including ceramics and carbides, for true erosion resistance. ACD keeps these high-value V500 trim parts in inventory and ships them fast from our Orlando, FL warehouse — so a worn valve is back in service before the next turnaround, not waiting on a long lead time.

A will-fit look-alike can quietly undermine control, shutoff and emissions compliance — genuine OEM parts protect the design the valve was built to.
